Watch of the Month: Cartier Panthere

For this issue of our Watch of the Month, we are highlighting an iconic luxury ladies watch—the Cartier Panthere. First launched in the 1980s and revived again last year by Cartier after a few years of absence, the Cartier Panthere has been a popular high-end watch for women for decades. Let’s have a look at some of our favorite versions and who knows, you may see one that would make a great gift (for yourself or a loved one) for the upcoming holiday season.

What Makes the Cartier Panthere a Panthere?

Before we get into some specific Panthere models, let’s explore the main characteristics of the Cartier Panthere watch. While the square versions of the Cartier Panthere are the most well known, there are round versions within the collection called the Panthere Cougar.

One design element that ties all Panthere watches together is the bracelet. Supple and graceful similar to the big cat the watch is named after, the Panthere bracelet design is made up of small brick-like links which wraps beautifully around the wrist. Depending on the model, the Panthere bracelet can be fashioned from yellow gold, two-tone steel and gold, or full stainless steel.

Other design details found on the Panthere watches are similar to those found on other Cartier watches. Namely the black Roman numerals, the blue sword-shaped hands, and the blue cabochon-cut stone set on the winding crown.

Full Yellow Gold Cartier Panthere Watch

For an ultra-luxurious take on this iconic Cartier luxury watch, there are the full 18k yellow gold versions. For instance, there's the beautiful Cartier Panthere ref. WGPN0008 sporting a full gold square 22 mm case and a matching gold square bezel with the pre-requisite exposed screws. Along with the center hour, minute, and seconds hands, the white dial also includes a date window at 3 o’clock on the dial.

The bracelet is exquisite in full yellow gold, wrapping around the wrist like a fine piece of high-jewelry. The deployant clasp is invisible from the exterior yet securely holds the watch in place.

Two Tone Cartier Panthere Watch

If you love the thriving two-tone trend in luxury watches as much as we do, then a yellow gold and steel Cartier Panthere watch is in order. This particular version of the Panthere is considered a midsize model with its 27 mm square case.

From the square bezel to the links running through the bracelet, this two-tone Cartier Panthere watch has just the right amount of 18k yellow gold accents to make it pop. There is also a date window on the dial, but this time it sits discreetly at the five o’clock position.

Stainless Steel Cartier Panthere Watch

In the 1980s, the Cartier Panthere watch was exclusively available in gold and two-tone. However, in the 1990s, the Maison added a modern stainless steel version, making the collection more accessible to a younger audience.

This full steel Cartier Panthere is categorized as a mini model given its demure 22 mm square case. The dial is kept simple with just a pair of blue hour and minute hands while the gorgeous link bracelet still includes a five-link configuration, just in a thinner form.

Gold and Diamond Cartier Panthere Cougar

To accompany the square Panthere watches, Cartier also made round versions they dubbed Panthere Cougar. On this particular opulent version of the Cartier Panthere Cougar watch that pairs 18k yellow gold with gleaming diamonds on the case, we see the same signature link bracelet as other traditional square versions.

The dial carries on the circular shape of the case with a round railroad chapter ring framing the black Roman numerals and blue center hands. Yet again, we see a date window at 3 o’clock for a touch more practicality from a luxurious gold dress watch.

With strong silhouettes, a jewelry-like bracelet, and an elegant flair that Cartier does so well, the Panthere watch is a fantastic everyday luxury watch that can seamlessly go from desk-to-dinner. Whether you opt for an understated steel model, a trendy two-tone version, or a lavish full gold number, the Cartier Panthere watch is a top timepiece for women that’ll never go out of style.
